What is First Aid?
You must have heard about the term, first aid. But do you know what it is all about? First aid is the primary help given to a victim who is in need of medical attention due to an accident or illness before medical professionals arrive. It involves simple techniques to assist victims and prevent their conditions from worsening. It is important to note that first aid is not a substitute for medical help.
Why First Aid?
In India, the death rate has constantly been increasing day by day. Heart disease and stroke are one of the leading causes of deaths due to non-availability of emergency medical services followed by road accidents. Medically, it takes only 6 minutes for brain cells to die due to lack of oxygen. Hence, it is essential to learn the techniques of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) which is given in case of cardiac arrest to revive the heart. The longer the time it takes for medical help to arrive, the higher the chances of severity. During first-aid training, every individual learns how to handle a patient or victim during emergencies. They learn how to assess the victim’s condition and apply the right techniques to control the injuries. First-aid is necessary to prevent damage, promote recovery and save lives of people during medical emergencies.
Everyone Should Know First Aid
In a country like India, there are many myths in dealing with medical emergencies. When people see someone faint, they rush to offer water to the victim. However, this is not necessary and in fact, may worsen their state. Only a trained individual would know this and could effectively help the person. In our day to day life, be it at work or at home, we all are prone to some risks. Accidents and other medical emergencies do not occur with any prior notice. One should always have easy access to a first-aid box and local emergency numbers. To promote quick treatment, safety, and the well-being of people, it is essential that communities come together and get themselves skilled in first-aid techniques by attending professional training.
How will first aid training help?
Time to Take Action
In spite of its importance and necessity, first-aid training still lacks recognition in India. Schools must include this in their formal curriculum for students aged 13 years and above. It is time that every individual realize the significance of this training and become a responsible citizen instead of being a mere bystander during medical emergencies and accidents. Every life matters. Every second counts.
